The Oceti Sakowin Oyate Bibliography Project

Compiled by the Oak Lake Writers’ Society.
(Updated April 2020)

This bibliography is a work in progress not a definitive list of D/N/Lakota authors. We expect that we missed authors who should be on this list. Please use this form to submit additional entries for consideration. Pro Tip: To search this list, please use your Internet browser’s ‘Find’ option, usually under the Edit menu.

This bibliography is mostly formatted in MLA style with the addition of tribal identity listed in bold font following the author's citation.  All of the authors on this list have self-identified as an Oceti Sakowin tribal member or direct descendant.  As far as we know, their claims have not been proven otherwise.

Note: Not all these books pass the criteria established by the #NativeReads committee. To learn more about this criteria, see page 2 of “Stories of the Oceti Sakowin.” For instance, some of these books have been co-authored or co-edited or focus on non-Oceti Sakowin topics or have fallen out of print.  Nevertheless, we realize that all of the books on this list have helped shape our knowledge and understanding of the rich and complex Oceti Sakowin literary tradition.

***A special thank you to LaVonne Yazzie  and Talyssa Caya for typing this bibliography.  We would also like to acknowlege College Horizons and the Brookings Reconciliation Council for supporting these students' contributions.***
