Lydia Whirlwind Soldier (Sicangu Lakota) was born in the Bad Nation community in the Rosebud Sioux Reservation. She is a poet, author, instructor at Sinte Gleska Tribal College and curriculum professional for elementary through secondary students all over South Dakota. Her educator role and experiences evolved from that of an elementary school teacher to Indian Studies Coordinator for the Todd County School District in Mission, South Dakota. After earning her graduate degree at Sinte Gleska University on the Rosebud Reservation, she went on to graduate with a master’s degree in education administration from Pennsylvania State University. Whirlwind Soldier is a poet, business owner and recognized craftswoman, having won first place at the Northern Plains Tribal Arts Exhibition in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for a traditional cradleboard. She is a charter member of the Oak Lake Writers’ Society. Last, but not least, Whirlwind Soldier has also served as on the Rosebud Sioux Tribal Council.
